CLOVER SHORTS BY WILLOW AND CO. (TURNED INTO TROUSERS BY DOGUINCHO!)

My kids school doesn’t have a uniform so, to make my mornings easier, I kind of decided denim trousers/shorts/skirts would be their informal uniform. The only problem is that it is so hard to find loose fitting trousers in our stores. Shinnies are all I can buy… So I decided to make a pair of Clover Denim Trousers Teresa could wear to school and be cool and comfortable ate the same time. Here they are!

The Pattern: Clover Shorts by Hayley from Welcome to the Mouse House for Willow and Co. Besides turning the shorts into trousers by lengthening them, I’ve omitted a couple of nice features from this wonderful pattern because I wanted a super fast project to sew. So I kept the side pockets but left behind the belt and its loops. I love the fitting of these trousers! I think they are really unique!

Fabric / Notions: The fabric is light weight denim from an ugly women’s dress I bought at my local street market for 3 Euros. It is really soft and drapes nicely and that’s why I bought such and hideous peace of garment (sorry, but I forgot to take “before” photos). I’ve sew everything with contrasting white thread and I am glad I did it because it adds some texture to the plain and monochromatic denim fabric.

So here are a couple of last minute photos from my last sewing project just in time to share with Willow and Co. Back to School Contest!

And, good news, these trousers look great with the Aster Cardigan I made last week. I think Teresa already has a proper first day of school outfit!

 

ASTER CARDIGAN BY WILLOW AND CO.

I’ve made a cardi! A knit cardi! I am so happy!

I’ve always had issues sewing with knits but, when I saw Willow and Co. Aster Cardigan, I knew I had to give it a try. So I bought a new - but cheap and not fancy at all - sewing machine and a piece of not very stretchy knit and finally went for it. You know what? It wasn’t as hard as I thought! And I think I will be sewing a lot more with knits from now on.

The Pattern: Aster Cardigan by Vanessa from lbg-studio for Willow and Co. Patterns. This is such a simple and easy pattern to sew. Yet the result is super clean and professional! The original pattern comes with a collar (actually it comes with two lovely types of collar) but, this time, I’ve decided to make it a little bit different: I’ve finished the neckline with bias tape in order to close the cardigan with a bow.

Fabric /Notions: White and red striped knit from my local shop (Os Bispos) and white and navy polka dot bias tape I had on my stash.

We have been postponing the photo shot all week as Teresa was not in the mood for photos but today we really had to do it and all I got was this grumpy face…

..then, when Teresa started having fun, she wouldn’t show the cardigan!

WILLOW AND CO . LET’S GO GLAMPING!

Last March I was lucky enough to test two patterns from the new Willow and Co. summer collection: the Mulberry Tunic (check out mine here) and the Fawn Lilly Dress (check out mine here). I loved the quality of design, the care and attention given to the instructions and, especially, the clothes I made! These clothes are, at the same time, versatile and practical, but cute and special. My daughters loved them and wanted to wear every single garment everyday from day one.

No passado mês de Março tive a sorte de testar dois moldes da colecção de verão da Willow and Co: a Mulberry Tunic  (a minha está aqui) e o Fawn Lilly Dress (o meu está aqui). Fiquei impressionada com a qualidade do design, com o cuidado com que foram feitos os moldes e as respectivas instruções e, principalmente, com as roupas que fiz. Roupas versáteis e práticas mas giras e diferentes. Roupas que as minhas filhas adoraram e quiseram vestir desde o primeiro dia.

I was anxiously waiting for the launch of the collection when I received an email from my friend Suz, from Sew Pony, asking me if I would like to go glamping with her and Rachel, from Stitched Together. Going gampling with them meant I could sew any Willow and Co pattern. I felt like I had own the lottery! I felt like sewing all the patterns! But I knew I didn’t have time to sew all the patterns so I ended up choosing three that seemed more suited to my daughters’ the style and age.

Estava eu, ansiosa, à espera do lançamento da colecção, quando recebi um e-mail da minha amiga Suz, do blog Sew Pony, a perguntar se gostaria de participar com a Rachel, do blog Stitched Together, no blog tour. E o melhor era que poderia escolher qualquer molde. Ou mesmo todos os moldes… Achei que me tinha saído a sorte grande! Como não tinha tempo para costurar todos os moldes, acabei por escolher três que me pareceram mais adaptados ao estilo e idade das minhas filhas.

For Teresa I picked the Ash Jumpsuit as I thought she would love the open back on the blouse (she loved it!). The pattern features several options and I ended up making a two pieces outfit instead of a real jumpsuit. I followed the instructions to the letter and only changed the short’s hem, making it a bit shorter and adding cuffs. I really enjoyed customizing these shorts by adding small details made with the blouse fabric on the waistband and pockets.

Para a Teresa, que já tem seis anos, escolhi o Ash Jumpsuit porque achei que ela iria adorar o ar mais teenager do top com as costas abertas (adorou!). O molde apresenta várias opções e eu acabei por fazer um top e uns calções separados em vez de um verdadeiro macaco. Segui à risca as instruções e apenas alterei a bainha dos calções, tornando-os mais curtos e adicionando a virola no remate. Gostei imenso de poder “personalizar” os calções com pequenos detalhes do tecido do top no cós e nos bolsos.

For Ines, who likes to dress girly but, at the same time, only wears comfortable and practical clothes, I picked the Persimmon Dress and the Clover Shorts. I made the tunic version of the Persimmon Dress (with side ruffles, off course!), perfect to be worn with the Clover Shorts. Then made the inside of the shorts’ pockets, waistband and belt loops with the leftover fabric from the tunic. Unfortunately the fabric was not enough to make the shorts sash so I made it with some simple black cotton ribbon.

Para a Inês, que gosta de se vestir “de princesa” mas ao mesmo tempo só usa roupa que seja confortável e prática, escolhi o conjunto Persimmon Dress e Clover Shorts (um sucesso, também!). Fiz a versão túnica com folhos do Persimmon Dress, perfeita para ser usada com calções! E aproveitei todos os bocadinhos do tecido que sobrou da túnica para dar graça aos calções, ou seja, usei-o no interior dos bolsos, do cós e das presilhas. Infelizmente já não chegou para fazer o cinto por isso resolvi o assunto com uma fita de algodão preta.

 

 

The main fabric I chose for these outfits is one of my all time favorite fabrics, Up Up and Away, designed by one of my all time favorite designers, Heather Moore from Skinny laMinx, for one of my all time favorite fabric brands, Cloud 9! (It was bought in this lovely etsy shop.) This fabric is so special (and perfect to go glamping!) that I decided to match it with a very simple cotton (canvas like, I think) from my local shop.
Sewing these outfits with the perfect fabric and perfect patterns was a pleasure and it is also a pleasure to see my daughters wearing such lovely clothes!

O tecido principal é um dos meus tecidos preferidos, de um dos meus designers preferidos, de uma das minhas marcas de tecidos preferidas! Chama-se Up Up and Away e foi desenhado pela sul-africana Heather Moore da Skinny laMinx para a Cloud 9 Fabrics. (E foi comprador aqui.) Como não era suficiente para fazer tudo, juntei um tecido básico com uma textura em branco e preto que comprei na Feira dos Tecidos em Campo de Ourique.
Usando o tecido perfeito e os moldes perfeitos, costurar estas roupas foi um prazer e é também um prazer ver as minhas filhas assim (tão bem) vestidas!

THE MULBERRY TUNIC . WILLOW AND CO. PATTERNS

Tal como prometido, aqui fica a segunda peça de roupa (a primeira, vestido Fawn Lily podem ver aqui) que fiz usando os novos moldes Willow and Co. O molde de hoje chama-se Mulberry Tunic e foi desenhado pela Olga do blog Kid Approved.
Esta túnica não só é gira como também óptima para os dias de primavera. Feita em tecido de quilting (algodão de peso médio) não é nem demasiado quente nem demasiado fresca. É perfeita!
Tal como os restantes moldes da Willow and Co., a Mulberry Tunic tem várias opções que se podem intercambiar: pode ser feita com mangas compridas ou curtas e com ou sem capucho. Além dos (obrigatórios) bolsos escondidos nas costuras laterais, pode ainda ter um bolso frontal.
E o melhor de tudo? Fica bem a rapazes e a raparigas!

As promised, here's the second garment (check out the first one, a Fawn Lily Dress, here) I made with the new Willow Co. patterns. The Mulberry Tunic was designed by Olga from Kid Approved and it is gorgeous!
But it isn’t only a gorgeous tunic... It is also super comfy and wearable. Made with quilting fabric, the Mulberry Tunic is neither too warm nor too cool for spring days. It is perfect!
Like all other Willow and Co. patterns, the Mulberry Tunic has several options: it can be made with long or short sleeves, with or without hood. In addition to the (mandatory, I must say…) inseam pockets, there is an optional front pocket.
And, do you know the best news? It looks great both on boys and girls!

Para tornar a túnica da Teresa totalmente “de menina” usei um tecido florido, o Floral Vine da Holly Holderman para a Lake House Dry Goods, e coordenei-o com um tecido de riscas da mesma colecção, o Daily Strype, nos bolsos e no interior do capucho. Ambos os tecidos vieram, mais uma vez, da Fat Quarter Shop. A fita de viés do remate do capucho é cor-de-rosa com bolinhas encarnadas e já a tinha na minha caixa de retrosarias. Por sorte ficou mesmo bem!
Gostei imenso de costurar esta túnica! As instruções da Olga são impecáveis e é um projecto relativamente fácil e rápido de executar. Só alterei um pormenor no molde original: como os tecidos de quilting têm um avesso bastante feio, forrei o capucho com o tecido de riscas para o acabamento ficar perfeito. Mas essa é uma alteração facílima de fazer!

I wanted Teresa’s tunic to be girly so I choose a lovely floral fabric as main fabric - Floral Vine by Holly Holderman for Lake House Dry Goods - and coordinated it with a striped fabric from the same collection - Daily Strype – for inseam pockets and hood lining. Both fabrics were, once again bought at Fat Quarter Shop. The pink polka dot bias tape on the hood is from my stash and it looks perfect with both fabrics. Lucky me!
I really enjoyed sewing this tunic! Olga's instructions are super clear and the Mulberry tunic is a fast, fun and not too dificult project to sew. On Teresa’s tunic made a little change to the original pattern:  I lined the hood as I didn’t want the wrong side of the fabric to show. O the inside of the hood is made of the same striped fabric as the inseam pockets.

A Teresa ficou contentíssima como a sua nova túnica. Já a usou imensas vezes! Não é bom quando isso acontece?

FAWN LILY DRESS AND TUNIC . WILLOW AND CO. PATTERNS

No final do mês passado tive a sorte de testar dois dos moldes da Willow and Co. Esta nova marca de moldes foi criada por um grupo de talentosas blogers de todo o mundo e a sua primeira colecção é absolutamente incrível!
O primeiro molde que testei foi a Mulberry Tunic, desenhado pela Olga do blog Kid Approved, mas, para verem a túnica que fiz, terão que esperar por amanhã…
Hoje tenho um vestido de Verão para mostrar! Mais precisamente o Fawn Lily Dress, desenhado pela Rebecca do blog Rock The Stitch.
O molde oferece uma série de opções: túnica ou vestido (com várias alturas), dois tipos de manga, dois tipos de corpo e três tipos de saia. (Não faço ideia como traduzir os termos mais técnicos de inglês para português por isso será melhor verem as imagens de apresentação do molde para descobrirem todas as opções possíveis. Desculpem!)
Eu escolhi o corpo “crossover yoke” com as mangas “cap sleeve” e a saia “A-line skirt” para fazer um vestido com “above the knee lengh”. (Desculpem, mais uma vez!)

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to test two of their new Spring/Summer patterns.The first pattern I’ve tested was The Mulberry Tunic, designed by Olga from Kid Approved, but you will have to wait for tomorrow to see the tunic I made for Teresa. Sorry...Today I have a gorgeous summer dress to show you! It’s The Fawn Lily Dress designed by Rebecca from The Rock Stitch.The Fawn Lily Pattern offers a big range of options: tunic or dress (with different lengths), two different sleeves, two different yokes and three different skirts. And it is possible to mix and match all options. Isn’t it great?! I chose the crossover yoke with cap sleeves and skirt and A- line skirt and made an above-the- knee dress for Teresa.

 Num ataque de coragem consegui, pela primeira vez, cortar um dos tecidos do prémio que recebi ao ganhar o Sewalong do Project Run and Play no ano passado (obrigada Fat Quarter Shop!) e não me arrependo nem um bocadinho. Este é talvez um dos vestidos mais giros que vi nos últimos tempos!

 

I finally had the courage to cut one of the fabrics I bought at Fat Quarter Shop with the gift certificate I received last year for winning one Project Runand Play Sew Along and I do not regret it! This is, I’m sure, one of the cutest dresses I've seen lately! By the way, the fabric is So happy Together by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs.

Apesar de não ser um vestido facílimo de costurar, as instruções da Rebecca são tão boas que nem se dá por isso. Adorei a forma como as mangas são totalmente cosidas pelo avesso. Parece magia! E também gostei muito de aprender um pequeno truque para unir duas peças que têm curvaturas diferentes. É tão bom quando os moldes nos ensinam novas técnicas, não é?

Este e os outros moldes da colecção de Primavera/Verão 2014 da Willow and Co. estarão à venda a partir de dia 22 de Abril no site da marca. Passem por lá!
A Teresa adorou o seu vestido novo e ainda me sobrou tecido suficiente para fazer outro para a Inês. Não acham que elas vão andar giras este Verão?

Despite not being a very easy dress to sew, Rebecca’s instructions are so great that I didn’t even notice it and it was smooth sailing from beginning to end. I loved the way the sleeves are sewn inside out. It looks like magic! And I also enjoyed learning a little trick that helps sewing together two pieces with different curves. I wish I knew it before… It's so great when you get to learn new techniques with patterns, isn’t it?
