MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hi everyone! Merry Christmas! My name is Marta, I blog at DoGuincho and I live in Cascais – a seaside village near Lisbon – with my husband and our two daughters.

I am thrilled to be part of this great Christmas series! Thank you so much for inviting me, Rachel and Suz. What a great idea this is!

For me, this time of the year is all about having my family together! My mother had 7 sisters and brothers and my father 5, so we are a big family. Some of us are not living in Portugal so this is the perfect occasion to see all my cousins and their families.

Since we have dinner at my grandmother’ on Christmas Eve and my daughters always come home (very late in the evening) already wearing their sleepwear, I decided to make them pajamas!

Though I am not a great fan of Christmas prints, I found this lovely fabric (Holiday Frost by Jan Shade Beach for Henry Glass & Co.) at my favorite local sewing supplies store and bought it even before knowing what I was going to sew… Then I matched it with a polka dot “everyday” fabric and added some details made of bright green ribbon and vintage buttons for a real Christmas look.

As I wanted a tuxedo like shape on the blouse neckline, I had to draft myself the pattern for these pajamas. I absolutely love the look as it is clean and simple but has some wonderful Christmas details. Teresa and Ines were already having fun with the fabric stars I added at the end of the blouse ties during the photo session…

I think my daughters were really please with the result too. But they were a lot more excited about our advent calendar (it will be hanged on our living room wall as soon as I find a way of doing it…) with all its little presents and treats!

 

COPENHAGA . COPENHAGEN

Depois de anos e anos sem viajar - a minha última verdadeira viagem tinha sido antes da Teresa nascer… - consegui finalmente deixar as miúdas com a avó e meter-me num avião!
Estive cinco dias em Copenhaga que me souberam pela vida!
Adorei a cidade, tão diferente da minha, as pessoas e a possibilidade de andar de bicicleta para todo o lado.
E, como não podia deixar de ser, dei uma volta pelas lojas de tecidos e retrosarias… Por sorte encontrei um mapa com a localização da maior parte das lojas ligadas à costura, o que me tornou a vida bem mais fácil!
Sem ter propriamente perdido a cabeça, lá comprei umas coisitas… Aqui estão:

After years and years without traveling – I’ve made my last real trip just before Teresa was born ... - I finally managed to leave the girls with their grandmother and get on a plane!
I spent five days in Copenhagen and had the time of my life!
I loved the city, so different from Lisbon, the friendly people and the possibility of riding a bicycle all over town.
And, as you can imagine, I made a little tour around fabric shops and haberdasheries... I was lucky enough to find a map with the location of most stores related to sewing, which I made ​​life much easier!
Some stores had quite different products from the ones we have here in Portugal so and I could help myself and bought some little things to bring home with me... Here they are:

Adorei a loja! Muita retrosaria, oganizada por cores, e pode-se mexer em tudo. Tive pena de não poder trazer mais nada porque não era barata...

I loved this store! Lost of good quality haberdashery products, displayed by colors, and I could more around and touch everything (in Portugal that's not common and usually you have to ask the staff if they have what you want and they will bring it to you). I would love to have bought more stuf but the store was quite expensive...

Amostras de tecidos de uma loja que encontrei, por acaso, no centro de Copenhaga e que não vem no mapa. Os tecidos são lindos mas não me consigo lembrar do nome da loja...

Quatro moldes de roupa de criança em dinamarquês! E um conjunto de lençol e almofadas com um motive nitidamente nordico... Encontrados numa feira de sabado no bairro de Osterbro.

Uma série de tecidos giros e não muito caros da loja Stoff 2000. Acho que esta loja deve ser o equivalente ao Santo Contestável dinamarquês...

Nice and not that expensive fabrics from Stoff 2000. That's just the everyday Danish fabric store, I think. But I liked it and the prints are very different from the ones we get here in Portugal.

FÉRIAS GRANDES . SUMMER HOLIDAYS

As férias grandes acabaram!
Estamos de volta a casa depois de um mês cansativo mas bem passado.
Os dias passados na costa vicentina foram fantásticos com windsurf, surf, carreirinhas e muito sol nas praias mais bonitas que conheço.
Já voltei à costura e espero poder mostrar os novos projetos em breve…

The summer holidays are over!
We are back home after a tiring but well spent month.
The days in the Costa Vicentina (at the south west of Portugal) were fantastic with windsurf, surf and lots of sun at the most beautiful beaches I know.
I've already started sewing and I hope I can show you some new projects soon...

COSTA VICENTINA

O fim-de-semana passado estive numa das zonas de Portugal de que mais gosto: a Costa Vicentina. Com o pretexto de ir ao casamento da Catarina na Carrapateira aproveitei para revisitar algumas das praias mais bonitas que já vi e onde passei muitos verões de prancha e vela às costas. Aqui fica uma fotografia da Praia do Amado só para abrir o apetite!

Para o meu amigo João, que simpaticamente me hospedou, resolvi pintar uma t-shirt. Para um homem é sempre tão difícil arranjar um presente… Achei que se ele não gostasse pelo menos podia usar como pijama!

 Usei uma técnica muito básica porque queria um padrão repetitivo e simples. Colando um pouco de fita-cola à parte de trás de um botão fiz um carimbo. Fui carimbando com tinta branca e azul até gostar do resultado. Foi um trabalho algo estranho porque normalmente preparo os meus projetos mas este foi feito de forma mais intuitiva. Achei que ele ia achar graça a ter uma etiqueta das WINDYGIRLS por isso cosi-a na frente da t-shirt.

Um dia ainda vou desenvolver esta técnica de estampagem porque me diverti imenso com as tintas e o carimbo improvisado. Tenho também dado uma vista de olhos nos blogs de pintura em tecido e visto coisas incríveis. Vejam só estes incríveis trabalhos destas senhoras: Jessica Jones (vejam as suas experiencias com a Inkodye), Lara Cameron, Leslie Keating, Kristen Doran e Lotta Jansdotter.

Last weekend I’ve been to one of my favorite places in Portugal: Costa Vicentina. With the excuse of of attending my friend’s Catarina weeding in Carrapateira I took the opportunity to revisit some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen and where I spent many summers with my windsurf board. Here is a picture of Amado Beach just to whet your appetite! For my friend João, who kindly hosted me, I decided to paint a t-shirt. For a man it is always so hard to find a gift ... I thought that if he did not like it, at least I could wear it as pajamas!  I’ve used a very basic technique because I wanted a simple repeating pattern. To make the stamp I’ve just pasted a bit of tape to the back of a button. Then I just started stamping till I was pleased with the result. It was kind of an odd kind of work because normally prepare my projects but this time I just “went with the flow”. I thought he would be amused to have a WINDYGIRLS label so I sewed it in the front of the shirt. One day I'll develop this technique as I had a great time printing with this improvised stamp. I also took a look at some fabric painting blogs and saw some inspiring stuff. Look at the amazing work of these ladies: Jessica Jones (see her experiences with Inkodye), LaraCameron, Leslie Keating, Kristen Doran and Lotta Jansdotter.

PÁSCOA . EASTER

O fim-de-semana foi de vento. Mas com as miúdas em casa é complicado pegar na prancha e desaparecer… Hoje estava muito vento mesmo. Mas a arquitetura chamou-me para trabalhar… No verão talvez dê para voltar ao mar.
Já vai um pouco atrasado mas não queria deixar de fazer um post sobre a Pascoa. É uma festa importante para a minha família porque no Natal nem sempre conseguimos juntar todos os primos e as suas famílias. Este ano eramos quase 50, 16 dos quais crianças com menos de 10 anos!
O almoço foi em casa da minha mãe em Alcácer do Sal e o dia estava ótimo para aproveitar o jardim.
Os miúdos andaram de baloiço,…

…apanharam caracóis,…

…deram-lhes de comer,…

…fizeram uma casa com palmeiras de plástico para os bichos de conta.

Mas o momento mais aguardado da tarde foi a caça aos ovos de chocolate. Já se tornou uma tradição e os miúdos adoram. Uns pegaram em sacos, outros em baldes, uns fizeram equipes, outros foram sozinhos.

No dia seguinte achei graça ver no jornal as fotografias de uma corrida com ovos de chocolate e colheres de pau que se faz na Casa Branca. Que ótima ideia! Para o próximo ano acho que temos que fazer o mesmo.

The weekend was windy. But with the girls at home is difficult to pick up the  board and disappear... Today it was windy. But I needed to work on my architecture projects ... This summer I might windsurf again.
I know it is a bit late, but I had to have a post about Easter. It is an important holiday for my family because most of the times we can‘t be together at Christmas. This year we were almost 50, 16 of which were children under 10 years old!
We had lunch at my mother's house in Alcacer do Sal (a beautiful village 80Km south of Lisbon) and the day was sunny and hot, great to enjoy the garden.
The kids enjoyed the swing,...
... caught some snails,...
... gave them food, ...
...made a sand house with plastic palm trees for the woodlouses.
But the most awaited moment of the afternoon was the hunt for chocolate eggs. It has become a tradition and the kids love it. Some took bags, others took buckets, some formed times, others were alone.
The next day I was amused to see the pictures in the newspaper of the race with chocolate eggs and wooden spoons traditionally made at the White House. What a great idea! Next year I think we have to do it!
