TERESA CAN SEW!

No ano passado ganhei este livro num sorteio organizado pela An do blog StraightGrain. Chama-se Simple Sewing – 30 Fast and Easy Projectsfor Beginners, foi escrito pela americana Katie Lewis e os seus projectos são realmente simples e rápidos mas também giros e perfeitos para ensinar uma criança a costurar!

Last year I was lucky enough to win this book in a giveaway organized by the blog StraightGrain (Thanks, An!). SimpleSewing - 30 Fast and Easy Projects for Beginners, was written by Katie Lewis and its projects are simple and fast but also super cool and perfect for teaching a child to sew!

Os projectos estão divididos em vários capítulos: Acessórios, Casa, Celebrações, Bebé, Dias de Escola e Brinquedos. São todos acompanhados por explicações precisas e muitas fotografias. Há ainda um capitulo, em jeito de introdução, onde se fala sobre tecidos, termos e técnicas de costura,…

The book is divided into several chapters featuring different themes: Accessories, Home, Celebrations, Baby, School Days and Toys. All projects have precise tutorials and lots of photos. There is also an introductory chapter about sewing supplies, fabrics, sewing techniques and terms,...

Este fim-de-semana mostrei o livro à Teresa e perguntei-lhe se gostava de aprender a costurar. A resposta foi um entusiasmado sim! Folheamos o livro e resolvemos fazer um estojo para lápis. Depois fomos ao meu armário de tecidos e escolhemos: um Liberty de flores azuis para o exterior e uma cambraia azul de uma camisa para o interior.

A teresa adorou a experiencia! Já usa o seu novo estojo para a escola e já fez outro para oferecer a uma amiga… Estou impressionada! (E muito orgulhosa, claro!)

Last weekend I showed Teresa the book and asked her if she would like to learn to how to sew. The answer was an enthusiastic yes! We looked through the projects on the book and decided to make a pencil pouch. Then we went to my closet and picked two fabrics: a lovely Liberty print and a piece of chambray from a man’s shirt and started sewing.

The Teresa loved to sew! She is already taking her new home made pencil pouch to school and has sewn another one to give to her best friend… I am impressed! (And proud!)

SEW ALL 26 . I IS FOR INES

Há umas semanas fui contactada pela Katy do blog No Big Dill para participar na sua série Sew All 26. Como tinha que escolher uma letra do alfabeto e depois costurar algo alusivo a essa letra escolhi a letra T, a primeira letra do nome da minha filha Teresa e também uma letra que daria pano para mangas no que diz respeito a termos de costura (em inglês: Top, Trousers, Turquoise,…)

A few weeks ago I received an email from Katy (she blogs at No Big Dill and I’m sure you know her and her great work) inviting me to be part of her series Sew All 26. I had to pick a letter of the alphabet and then sew something inspired by this letter. I end up choosing the letter T, as it is the first letter on my oldest daughter name, Teresa, and also because there are lots of sewing terms with it: Top, Trousers, Turquoise, ...

Depois achei que a Inês, a minha filha mais nova, também deveria ter direito a uma peça de roupa inspirada na primeira letra do seu nome. Mas nunca pensei que a costura (mais uma vez, em inglês) tivesse tão poucas palavras começadas por I… Puxei pela cabeça, procurei na net, em livros e nada!
Entretanto lembrei-me que Inkodye, uma tinta que reage à luz e dá resultados incríveis, começa com I. Mas essa tinta não se consegue arranjar em Portugal… Daí lembrei-me de tingir… Daí surgiu Índigo, um dos meus pigmentos naturais preferidos!  

Then I thought I should also sew something for Ines, my youngest daughter, inspired on her name’s first letter. But I never thought there would be so few sewing terms starting with an I... I searched all over the place (internet, books, inside my brain,...) and found nothing!I had to go for something else. I remembered that Inkodye, light-sensitive vat dye for natural fibers, starts with I. But I couldn’t buy it in Portugal... Then I thought that dyeing fabric with Indigo (yeah, that’s an I!) was something I wanted to do for a long time, so I had my problem solved!

Infelizmente não usei pigmento natural porque é, mais uma vez, impossível de encontrar em Portugal e porque, segundo consegui saber, é um dos pigmentos mais difíceis de usar. Usei pigmento sintético da Dylon que se encontra facilmente nas drogarias.
Como esta foi a minha primeira experiencia a tingir tecido optei por fazer algo bem simples e assim ter (quase) a certeza que tudo iria correr bem. Fiz uma saia para a Inês em veludo cotelê branco muito fininho, com uma barra tingida com azul índigo e um forro também tingido com um tom diferente da mesma cor.

Unfortunately, I didn’t go for the natural pigment because, once again it is impossible to find in Portugal, and also because it seems to be one of the hardest pigments to work with. Instead, I bought a sachet of dark blue synthetic pigment from Dylon at my local drugstore.
As this was my first experience dyeing fabric I chose to make something super simple so I would be (almost) sure that everything would go smoothly. I made a basic twirl skirt for Ines in light weight white corduroy with an Indigo dyed hem line. Since the corduroy fabric was slightly transparent, I added a lining skirt in a slightly lighter shade of Indigo.

Tingi o tecido do forro antes de o começar a costurar mas a barra da saia ganhou cor quando esta já estava meia feita (tinha a costura lateral e a bainha já terminadas).
Gosto imenso do efeito da tinta na barra da saia! Gosto do degradê da cor e de esta ter “subido” ao longo das riscas do veludo cotelê de forma não muito homogénea.
Adorei tingir tecido e tenho a certeza que o irei fazer mais vezes. Talvez da próxima com pigmentos naturais…

The fabric for the lining skirt was dyed before I started sewing it but I only made the indigo hem line on the corduroy outer skirt after sewing the side seam and hem.
I really like the Indigo hombre effect on the outer skirt hem! The way the color “climbed” the corduroy stripes is really nice, I think.
I loved the experience of dyeing fabric and I am sure I will do it more often. Maybe next time I’ll try natural pigments...

 

 

KCW DAY SIX . SATURDAY OUTFIT

Esta edição do Kids Clothes Week já está a terminar e só agora estou finalmente a conseguir publicar o meu primeiro projecto: uma saia de roda reversível para cada uma das minhas filhas.
Gosto de roupa reversível (vejam este vestido e esta saia de peitilho). É divertida e versátil!
Estas saias têm uma face em ganga fininha e outra em xadrez multicolor. O cós é, em ambos os lados, feito com ganga. Adoro poder conjuga-las com t-shirts de todas as cores possíveis. E as miúdas adoram saias de roda, claro!

This edition of the Kids Clothes Week is almost coming to an end and I'm finally publishing my first project: a reversible swirl skirt for each of my daughters.
I like reversible garments (check out this dress and this pinafore). They are fun and versatile!

These skirts have one side made in light weight denim and another in multicolor plaid. The waistband is, on both sides, made of denim. I love that I can match them with any basic colorful tee. And my girls love swirl skirts, of course!

Normalmente ao fim de semana a Teresa e a Inês andam vestidas de igual. É mais prático e fácil. Hoje estrearam as suas novas saias!

Usually, on weekends, I dress Teresa and Ines alike. It is actually practical and easier to dress them with matching clothes and they like it too. Today they wore for the first time their new skirts!

De manhã foram dar uma volta de bicicleta com saias xadrez.

In the morning they went for a bike ride with plaid skirts.

À tarde fizeram um passeio pelo passadiço da duna da Crismina com saias de ganga.

In the afternoon they made a walk through the nearby walkway with denim skirts.

Pelo meio viram uns desenhos animados na sua posição habitual: de pernas para o ar…

In between they watched TV in their favorite position: up side down...

SNACK BAGS . SACOS DE LANCHE

Em Setembro a Teresa entrou para a primária.

Claro que tinha feito planos para lhe fazer a mochila e o estojo mas, por falta de tempo e de organização, esses projectos acabaram por não sair da gaveta…
Mas consegui fazer estes sacos de lanche! Um para o lanche da manhã, outro para o lanche da tarde, devidamente “etiquetados” na letra manuscrita que ela está agora a aprender.

In mid September Teresa started elementary school.
Of course I had made plans to make her a backpack and a pencil case, but for lack of time and organization, these projects did not see the day light...
But I managed to make her these snack bags! One for the morning snack (“lanche da manhã”, in portuguese), one for an afternoon snack (“lanche da tarde” in portuguese), properly "tagged" in the kind of handwriting she is now learning at school.

Usei um resto de tecido de algodão de xadrez “Vichy” em duas cores diferentes (para ela os poder distinguir melhor enquanto ainda não sabe ler) e bordei as letras com a ajuda do meu arco de bordar.

I picked two bits of “vichy” cotton fabric from my stash in two different colors (this way she can distinguish the bags while she still learning to read properly) and embroidered the letters with the help of my embroidery loop.

Os sacos em si são básicos e facílimos de fazer. Basta seguir as instruções do meu tutorial para fazer sacos de para-vento ou guarda-sol, tendo o cuidado de adaptar as medidas (os sacos de lanche que fiz para a Teresa têm cerca de 20cmx30cm).

The bags are pretty basic and super easy and fast to sew. If you fell like making them, just follow the instructions on my tutorial formaking windscreen or umbrella bags, making sure you adapt its dimensions (the snack bags I made for Teresa are about 20cmx30cm).

PALMILHAS ESPECIAIS . CUSTUMIZED INSOLES

Esta semana comprei uns sapatos novos para a Teresa e para a Inês. Sou muito esquisita com sapatos e raramente consigo encontrar um par de que goste. Normalmente ou são feios ou caros ou as duas coisas juntas! Mas, desta vez, arranjei estes ténis de elástico baratíssimos e giros. Não resisti e trouxe logo dois pares para cada uma!
Elas adoraram os sapatos novos mas quando os experimentaram vimos que eram, principalmente para a Teresa, um pouco largos e por isso caiam dos pés ao andar. Ela já não os queria devolver (e eu também não!) e tivemos que arranjar uma solução “à antiga” para resolver a situação: palmilhas!
O Zé Guilherme foi ao sapateiro e comprou umas palmilhas. Cheiravam bem e tudo, mas eram muito feias! Lembrei-me de ter visto aqui umas palmilhas forradas e, em 5 minutos, os sapatos novos já tinham palmilhas giras e personalizadas.

This week I bought new sneakers for Teresa and Ines. I am very picky with shoes and can rarely find a pair that I like. Usually children’s shoes are either ugly or expensive or both things together! But these slip-on cap toe sneakers looked great and were so cheap... I could not resist and I brought home two pairs for each one!
The girls loved their new shoes but, when they tried them on, they were a bit too wide and were falling from their feet while walking. Teresa wanted so much to keep the new colorful sneakers (and so did I!) that we had to find an “old fashioned” solution for the situation: insoles!
Ze Guilherme went to the shoemaker and bought some insoles. They even had a nice smell, but they were very ugly! I remembered seeing here a beautiful pair of lined insoles and, in 5 minutes, the new shoes had customized insoles!

 

 

Forrar palmilhas é facílimo e pode fazer a diferença num par de sapatos. Basta:
Lining insoles is so easy and can make a simple pair of shoes look great. All you have to do is:

Tirar a palmilha do sapato ou comprar uma palmilha nova;
Remove the insole from the shoe or buy a new insole;
 

Cortar dois pedaços de tecido usado como molde a palmilha;
Cut two pieces of fabric (right and left foot) using the insole as pattern;

Colar o pedaço de tecido à palmilha com cola de spray;
Glue the piece of fabric to the insole with spray adhesive;

Voltar a colocar a palmilha no sapato;
Replace the insole in the shoe;

Calçar e brincar!
Put the “new” shoes on and play!

CARNAVAL . CARNIVAL

Este ano, pela primeira vez, as máscaras de carnaval não puderam ser feitas em casa. Com a máquina de costura estragada, tive que optar fatos comprados. Mas sou incapaz de vestir as minhas filhas com os típicos fatos de cetim por isso a tarefa de encontrar fatos de carnaval tornou-se uma verdadeira saga.
Para a Inês tínhamos pensado fazer um fato de pirata mas, quando eu já tinha arranjado uma parte dos adereços necessários, ela foi a casa das primas e apaixonou-se pelo fato de pinguim que a prima mais velha tinha usado no carnaval passado. Com o fato (comprado mas giro) emprestado foi só juntar umas meias-calças pretas e o traje ficou pronto.

A Teresa há muito que me tinha pedido um fato de Doutora Brinquedos, a personagem principal do seu desenho animado preferido. Ainda consegui fazer a bata antes de ficar sem máquina mas tudo o resto faltava. Com muita sorte lá consegui arranjar:
- a camisola de riscas roxas e brancas nos saldos da Modalfa;
- a saia cor de rosa nos saldos da Pré-natal;
- as leggings brancas na Primark (as leggings da Doutora Brinquedos são “roxo muito clarinho com bolas brancas e cor-de-rosa” – palavras da Teresa – e eu ainda procurei em algumas lojas mas foi completamente impossível encontrar por isso tive que a convencer que estas estavam perfeitas…)
- o estetoscópio e a mala de médico do Nenuco;

E quase ficava esquecida a bandelete… Não consegui encontrar uma bandelete roxa mas a Teresa adorou esta cor-de-rosa brilhante que encontrei na Acessorise. Ainda cortei uma flor numa folha de espuma EVA roxa com brilhantes e colei na bandelete para ficar mais parecida com a original. Foi um sucesso!

Mas o mais complicado ainda estava para vir! No dia de se mascarar a Teresa lembrou-se que a Doutora Brinquedos era “castanha”. Tínhamos que arranjar uma forma de mudar a sua pálida cor da pele. Lá fui buscar uma velhinha base bronzeadora para tentar resolver o problema. Não escureceu grande coisa mas ela achou que estava tal e qual!

This year, for the first time, I didn’t make my daughters’ carnival costumes. Since my sewing machine was broken, I had to go for purchased outfits. But, as I absolutely cannot dress them with those typical (and horrible) satin dresses, the task of finding carnival costumes for them became a real saga.
For Ines we thought I could make a pirate costume but, when I had already arranged some of the props needed, she saw the cutest  penguin costume at her cousins’ and absolutely  fell in love with it. With a pair of black pantyhose Ines was ready to go.
Teresa has been asking me to make her a Doc McStuffins costume for a long time, as she is the main character of her favorite TV series. I managed to sew the medical gown before my machine got broken but everything else was lacking. With some luck I could find:
- the white and purple striped sweater on sale at Modalfa;
- the pink skirt on sale at Prenatal;
- the white leggings at Primark (Doc McStuffins’  leggings are actually in a "very pale purple with white and pink dots" - Teresa’s words precisely  - and I still looked at some shops but it was completely impossible to find it so I had to convince Teresa these were perfect ...)
- The stethoscope and doctor's bag from Nenuco;
And I almost forgot the headband... I could not find a purple headband but Teresa loved this bright pink I found in Acessorise. I attached a purple EVA foam flower to make it more like the original. It was a success!
But the hardest part was yet to come! On Carnival day Teresa remembered that Doc McStuffins skin color was “brown”. So I had to find a way to change her pale skin color. Fortunately I had a bit dark foundation at the end of my bathroom closet… It didn’t darkened much but she thought it was perfect!

COOLARES MARKET

No fim-de-semana estivemos no Coolares Market, na quinta do Pé da Serra em Sintra.

 

Toda a família se divertiu:

- O pai porque petiscou os petiscos deliciosos da Francisca Petisca,
- A mãe porque deu uma volta nas bancas de pessoas que fazem coisas como ela,
- As miúdas porque andaram de burro, mais precisamente de burra!

A mãe também gostou muito de ter descoberto a loja/galeria/atelier Flores do Cabo. Que sítio incrível!

This weekend we went to Coolares Market at Quinta do Pé da Serra, in Sintra. The whole family had a great time:
- The father because he had the opportunity to delight himself with the delicious treats from Francisca Petisca,
- The mother because she could stroll the stalls of people who do things like her,
- The girls because they went for a ride in a donkey!

The mother also loved having discovered the shop/gallery/workshop Flores do Cabo. What an incredible place!

FEIRA AMNO . AMNO STREET MARKET

Este fim-de-semana fui à feira de Natal organizada pela AMNO (Associação de Moradores de Nova Oeiras). Da última vez tinha lá ido vender. Desta vez fui comprar!

 

 

Como levei as miúdas as compras acabaram por não ser muitas (uma viola e um jogo, ambos em segunda mão) mas elas divertiram-se imenso com os jogos tradicionais e vieram todas contentes para casa com as caras pintadas.

Mais uma vez o ambiente estava fantástico e foi um ótimo programa para um domingo de inverno com sol.

 

This weekend I went to the Christmas street market organized by AMNO. The last time I went as a seller. This time I went as a buyer!
As I took the girls with me, I didn’t shop much (a guitar and a board game, both secondhand) but they had lots of fun playing traditional games and arrived home happy with their faces painted with bright colors.
Again the atmosphere was fantastic and it was a great way to spend a winter sunny Sunday.
