KIDS CLOTHES WEEK . DAY 3

It’s time for Kids Clothes Week and I am so excited to have been able to sew, photograph and blog about something I actually made this week!

This long sleeve tee was a really quick and easy sew and Teresa loved it. I am truly happy I finally started sewing with knits! It’s fun, easy and super-fast. Plus my kids love comfortable clothes and knits are so much comfy then woven…

 

Pattern: Climbing Flowers by Ottobre - Winter 2014. The original pattern is actually for a tunic, not a tee. I had turned it into a tee last October and loved the result so, as I needed a quick project, I picked the pattern pieces and.. Voilá! In just about 1 hour I had a new long sleeved tee for Teresa.

Fabric: Grey and navy cotton tricot knit from my local store (Feira dos Tecidos). This is such a soft and comfortable fabric! Love it!

 

 

Teresa likes the colors of this fabric but, when I bought it, I thought it was kind of too serious for little girls so I thought adding a stencil would be fun. I bought golden ink and gave it a try with the help of this wonderful book. Though I like the result I think it would have been better if the ink was opaque instead of transparent... But she is happy and that’s what really matters!

 

 

SNACK BAGS . SACOS DE LANCHE

Em Setembro a Teresa entrou para a primária.

Claro que tinha feito planos para lhe fazer a mochila e o estojo mas, por falta de tempo e de organização, esses projectos acabaram por não sair da gaveta…
Mas consegui fazer estes sacos de lanche! Um para o lanche da manhã, outro para o lanche da tarde, devidamente “etiquetados” na letra manuscrita que ela está agora a aprender.

In mid September Teresa started elementary school.
Of course I had made plans to make her a backpack and a pencil case, but for lack of time and organization, these projects did not see the day light...
But I managed to make her these snack bags! One for the morning snack (“lanche da manhã”, in portuguese), one for an afternoon snack (“lanche da tarde” in portuguese), properly "tagged" in the kind of handwriting she is now learning at school.

Usei um resto de tecido de algodão de xadrez “Vichy” em duas cores diferentes (para ela os poder distinguir melhor enquanto ainda não sabe ler) e bordei as letras com a ajuda do meu arco de bordar.

I picked two bits of “vichy” cotton fabric from my stash in two different colors (this way she can distinguish the bags while she still learning to read properly) and embroidered the letters with the help of my embroidery loop.

Os sacos em si são básicos e facílimos de fazer. Basta seguir as instruções do meu tutorial para fazer sacos de para-vento ou guarda-sol, tendo o cuidado de adaptar as medidas (os sacos de lanche que fiz para a Teresa têm cerca de 20cmx30cm).

The bags are pretty basic and super easy and fast to sew. If you fell like making them, just follow the instructions on my tutorial formaking windscreen or umbrella bags, making sure you adapt its dimensions (the snack bags I made for Teresa are about 20cmx30cm).

PALMILHAS ESPECIAIS . CUSTUMIZED INSOLES

Esta semana comprei uns sapatos novos para a Teresa e para a Inês. Sou muito esquisita com sapatos e raramente consigo encontrar um par de que goste. Normalmente ou são feios ou caros ou as duas coisas juntas! Mas, desta vez, arranjei estes ténis de elástico baratíssimos e giros. Não resisti e trouxe logo dois pares para cada uma!
Elas adoraram os sapatos novos mas quando os experimentaram vimos que eram, principalmente para a Teresa, um pouco largos e por isso caiam dos pés ao andar. Ela já não os queria devolver (e eu também não!) e tivemos que arranjar uma solução “à antiga” para resolver a situação: palmilhas!
O Zé Guilherme foi ao sapateiro e comprou umas palmilhas. Cheiravam bem e tudo, mas eram muito feias! Lembrei-me de ter visto aqui umas palmilhas forradas e, em 5 minutos, os sapatos novos já tinham palmilhas giras e personalizadas.

This week I bought new sneakers for Teresa and Ines. I am very picky with shoes and can rarely find a pair that I like. Usually children’s shoes are either ugly or expensive or both things together! But these slip-on cap toe sneakers looked great and were so cheap... I could not resist and I brought home two pairs for each one!
The girls loved their new shoes but, when they tried them on, they were a bit too wide and were falling from their feet while walking. Teresa wanted so much to keep the new colorful sneakers (and so did I!) that we had to find an “old fashioned” solution for the situation: insoles!
Ze Guilherme went to the shoemaker and bought some insoles. They even had a nice smell, but they were very ugly! I remembered seeing here a beautiful pair of lined insoles and, in 5 minutes, the new shoes had customized insoles!

 

 

Forrar palmilhas é facílimo e pode fazer a diferença num par de sapatos. Basta:
Lining insoles is so easy and can make a simple pair of shoes look great. All you have to do is:

Tirar a palmilha do sapato ou comprar uma palmilha nova;
Remove the insole from the shoe or buy a new insole;
 

Cortar dois pedaços de tecido usado como molde a palmilha;
Cut two pieces of fabric (right and left foot) using the insole as pattern;

Colar o pedaço de tecido à palmilha com cola de spray;
Glue the piece of fabric to the insole with spray adhesive;

Voltar a colocar a palmilha no sapato;
Replace the insole in the shoe;

Calçar e brincar!
Put the “new” shoes on and play!

EMBRULHAR . WRAP UP

A primeira vez que vi alguém a coser papel achei que era uma ideia incrível!
Resolvi experimentar e fiquei fã.
Já cozi colares com as cores do arco-íris para a festa de anos da Teresa e cadernos de desenho com letras para oferecer às suas amigas. Desta vez usei esta técnica para embrulhar mais uma gola (parecida com esta que já mostrei aqui) que fiz para oferecer a uma amiga.

Comecei por cortar o pedaço de papel necessário para embrulhar. Cosi várias linhas em ponto corrido sem a preocupação de ficarem muito direitinhas. Envolvi a gola nesse papel e cosi as duas pontas para fechar o presente.

E, quando ofereci o presente à minha amiga, ela não o queria abrir para não estragar o embrulho!

The first time I saw someone machine sewing on paper I thought it was an amazing idea!
I decided to try it and immediately became addicted.
I’ve already sewn rainbow colored necklaces for Teresa’s birthday party and alphabet activity books to give to her friends.
This time I’ve used this technique to wrap a collar (similar to the one I’ve shown you her) I’ve made for a friend.
I started by cutting a rectangular piece of paper. Then, with my sewing machine, I made some lines across the paper not worrying if they were perfectly straight. To finish it, I wrapped the collar in the paper and machine sewed its two ends to close it.
And when I offered the gift to my friend, she did not want to open the package not to spoil it!

MAIS PRESENTES . MORE GIFTS

Mas não foram só as miúdas que tiveram a festas de anos este fim-de-semana…

Para uma amiga minha que comemorou o seu aniversário com um almoço no sábado passado fiz uma gola em fazenda.

 

O processo de conceção foi um pouco atribulado! A ideia era fazer uma gola parecida com esta (fantástica, não é?) mas em tecido. Como queria algo simples comecei por apenas debruar o tecido com fita de viés contrastante. Mas não ficou bem!

Então resolvi dar uma vista de olhos nos meus livros de costura… Um dos projetos do livro “The Perfect Handmade Bag” usava um “nó francês” que me pareceu perfeito para desenhar algo na gola.
Lembrei-me que tinha visto lã de arraiolos com cores lindíssimas à venda numa loja em Cascais e passei por lá para comprar um novelo.

 

Perceber como se faz um “nó francês” não foi fácil! Os primeiros não ficavam formados. Com a ajuda deste vídeo lá consegui dar a pequena volta final que faz com que o nó pareça um borboto.
Qualquer dia faço uma gola destas para mim também!

 

Last weekend I also had a friend’s birthday party! So I thought it would be nice to give her something homemade. I had this small piece of grey wool fabric that was perfect for a winter collar.
My idea was to make, with fabric, a collar like this (lovely, isn’t it?). As wanted it to have a kind of a minimal look, I began by simply hemming the fabric with contrasting bias tape. But it didn’t work!
So I decided to take a look at my sewing books for some inspiration... One project in the "The Perfect Handmade Bag" book by Clare Youngs used a "French knot" that seemed perfect to draw something on the collar.
Then I remembered that I had seen some wool yarns used on the typical Portuguese Arraiolos rugs with gorgeous colors for sale at a shop nearby and went there to buy one.
Learning how to make a French knot was not easy! The first ones I made didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to. But, with the some help from this video, I finally figured out the twist that I had to do to finish it the proper way.
I thing have to make a collar like this for me too!

CALENDÁRIO DE SECRETÁRIA . DESK PICTURE CALENDAR

Há muitos anos que ofereço à minha mãe um calendário no Natal.

Ao princípio comprava mas depois achei mais graça fazer eu mesma o calendário usando as fotografias que fui tirando à Teresa e à Inês ao longo do ano.

Aqui ficam as instruções para poder fazer um calendário de secretária com fotografias.

1 – Faça o download de todas as páginas do calendário aqui.
2 – Abra o PowerPoint (este programa faz parte do Office por isso deve ter no seu computador… Se não tiver, outros programas de imagem poderão ser usados.)
3 – Defina o tamanho da folha escolhendo no menu ESTRUTURA a opção CONFIGURAR PÁGINA e, já no quadro de configuração, defina LARGURA 15cm e ALTURA 10cm. A orientação deverá ser horizontal. Feche o quadro.
4 – Insira a página do calendário que pretende escolhendo no menu INSERIR a opção IMAGEM. No ecrã deverá aparecer a imagem do mês selecionado, corretamente posicionada horizontalmente e ocupando toda a folha.
5 – Insira a fotografia que pretende para esta página do calendário escolhendo novamente no menu INSERIR a opção IMAGEM. No ecrã deverá aparecer a fotografia sobreposta aleatoriamente sobre a página do calendário. Com o rato diminua ou aumente a fotografia e coloque-a no espaço a ela reservado (retângulo cinzento do lado esquerdo). A fotografia escolhida deve ser sempre vertical para caber no espaço definido.
6 – Repita os passos 3 a 5 para todos os meses do calendário.
7 – Salve cada página como uma fotografia escolhendo no menu GUARDAR COMO a opção OUTROS FICHEIROS e depois escolha da lista FORMATO JPEG.
8 – Copie para uma pen, um cartão de memória ou um cd e leve a uma loja para imprimir como uma fotografia normal de 10x15cm.
9 – Compre no IKEA um suporte para fotografias FINLIR e insira cada página do calendário na respetiva bolsa.

 

 

I’ve been offering my mom a calendar at Christmas for many years now.
At first I bought them, but then I found that it would be much nicer to make then myself using the photographs I took of Teresa and Ines throughout the year.
Here are the instructions to make a desk picture calendar.
1 - Download all the pages of the calendar here.
2 - Open the PowerPoint (this software is part of the Office so you should have it on your personal computer. If you don´t, you may try using any other image software.)
3 - Set the sheet size by choosing on the menu DESIGN the option PAGE SETUP and then define 15cm for WIDTH and 10cm for HEIGHT. The orientation should be horizontal.
4 - Insert the calendar page you want by choosing on the menu INSERT the option PICTURE. The screen should display the picture of the month selected, correctly positioned horizontally and occupying the whole sheet.
5 - Insert the photograph you want for this calendar page by choosing again on the menu INSERT the option PICTURE. The photo should appear randomly overlaid on the calendar page. With the mouse make the picture bigger or smaller and place it in its correct position (gray rectangle on the left). The photograph chosen must always be vertical to fit the space defined.
6 - Repeat steps 3-5 for each month of the calendar.
7 - Save all the calendar pages as photos by choosing on the menu SAVE AS the option OTHER FILES and then choose from the list the JPEG file format.
8 - Save all the images in a pen, a memory card or a CD and take it to the nearest shop for printing as a standard 10x15cm photo.
9 – Go to IKEA and buy a FINLIR picture holder and insert each calendar page on the respective pocket.

Just two final notes: I’m sorry if names of the PowerPoint menus are not correct but I have the Portuguese version and I’ve tried to translate it to English the best I could...  and the English version of the calendar does not have the indication of any festivities, as they change from country to contry, but you can add it yourself. 

FELIZ NATAL . MERRY CHRISTMAS

A nossa árvore de Natal tem sido feita ao longo dos últimos fins-de-semana e só ficou pronta hoje.Foi feita por nós e é totalmente ecológica: a árvore em cartão canelado tirado de uma caixa que encontrei e as bolas e a estrela com rolos de papel higiénico. As miúdas pintaram e a mãe cortou.

Our Christmas tree has been made ​​over the last weekends and was only ready today.
It is totally homemade and ecological: we’ve used corrugated cardboard for the tree and toilet paper rolls for the balls and the star. All painted by the girls and cut by me.

MR. PRINTABLES

A semana passada conheci o Mr. Printables. Adorei!

Os seus “free printables” para crianças são incríveis e, agora para o Natal, tem uma série de páginas para colorir, bonecos para construir e até calendários de advento. Tudo de graça e facilmente imprimível nas impressoras caseiras.
Aproveitei os cadernos com as letras do alfabeto para fazer um presente para a Teresa levar a uma festa de anos este fim-de-semana. Fiz um caderno com cada letra do nome da amiga dela. Para as capas usei uma folha um pouco mais grossa do que o normal (165gr, creio eu) e para as páginas interiores 6 folhas normais impressas de ambos os lados. Em vez de juntar as folhas todas com um fio grosso, como indica o site, cozi as lombadas com a máquina de costura em ponto corrido.

Para o presente ficar completo e pronto juntei umas canetas de feltro e embrulhei com um papel colorido.

Last week I met Mr. Printables. I loved it!
Their free printables for kids are awesome and, for Christmas, they have lots of coloring pages, puppets to build up and advent calendars. All for free and easily printable on our home printers.
I chose the “Alphabet Activity Books Printable” to make a gift for Teresa’s whose birthday party was this weekend. I made one activity book with each letter of her name. For the covers I went for a somewhat thicker that normal sheet (165gr, I believe) and the inside pages were made with 6 regular photocopy sheets printed on both sides. Instead of gathering all the sheets with a thick wire, as was showed on the site, I’ve sewn the spines with my sewing machine.
To get it ready to go I joined some felt pens and wrapped it all with colorful wrapping paper.

COLARES DE PAPEL . PAPER NECKLACES

Este fim-de-semana a casa foi invadida!
Mais pop cakes, mais um bolo da Mérida e colares com flores de papel para oferecer às amigas que vieram à festa de aniversário da Teresa. Em fim, uma trabalheira para a mãe que tem a mania que consegue fazer tudo ela mesma…
Sobre os pop cakes e sobre o bolo de aniversário já falei aqui. A novidade, que fez um enorme sucesso, foram os colares de flores de papel.

 

Lembrei-me de adaptar as grinaldas decorativas que vi no blog da Dana (sou grande fã das suas ideias simples mas giras e adoro as suas fantásticas fotografias…). O método de construção é exatamente o mesmo mas, em vez de deixar o final aberto, é necessário coser a última flor à primeira para fechar o colar. Usei papel de fotocópia colorido do Continente e cortei com um cortador em forma de flor da Artemio que encontrei na At Home (grande perdição, esta loja!), em Lisboa.
Mais uma vez não resisti a decorar a cerca da piscina com os balões com as cores do arco-íris da Showparty (são de ótima qualidade e 4 dias depois, com chuva e vento, ainda estão como novos) e que fazem parelha com os colares das mesmas cores.
No final, a casa estava de pantanas mas a Teresa tinha tido um dia em cheio!

This weekend our home was invaded by Teresa’s friends!
More pop cakes, another Brave birthday cake and lots of necklaces with paper flowers to give to all the girls. At the end, lots of work for this mother who thinks she can do everything by herself...
About the pop cakes and the birthday cake I’ve already spoken in my last post. The novelty, which was a huge success, were the necklaces made of paper flowers.
I thought I it would be easy to turn the decorative Paper Ball Chains I saw at Dana's blog (I am big fan of her simple but cute ideas and I love her great photos ...) into necklaces. The construction method is exactly the same but, instead of leaving the ends loose, it is necessary to sew the last flower to the first one in order to close the necklace. I used colored standard-weight paper and a flower shaped punch from Artemio to make them.
Once again I could not resist decorating the pool fence with rainbow colored balloons... (I went for the good quality ones and 4 days later, with rain and wind, they still look as good as new) and it looked nice because the balloons had the same colors as the collars.
When everyone went home, the house was as mess but Teresa had a full day!

RECEITA PARA JOGO DA MEMÓRIA . MEMORY CARD GAME TUTORIAL

 

O jogo da memória tem feito sucesso tanto com pais como com filhos por isso aqui fica a “receita” para o fazer.

The memory card game has been a hit with both parents and children so here is the tutorial for making it.

Vai necessitar de:
- Uma folha de cartão cinzento de 75x105cm com 1mm de espessura (ou outro cartão resistente),
- Restos de tecido de 12 qualidades diferentes (de preferência com texturas, cores ou desenhos que sejam facilmente diferenciáveis),
- Cola de stic e cola tudo,
- X-ato para cartão e tesoura para tecido,
- Esquadros para medir e cortar.

You will need:
- A sheet of 1mm thick gray card 75x105cm (or other sturdy card),
- Remains of 12different qualities of fabric (preferablytextures, colors and designs that are easily differentiable),
- Glue stick and multipurpose glue ,
- X-act to cut the card and scissors to cut the fabric,
- Squares to measure and cut.

 

Como fazer:
Corte o cartão em 48 quadrados de 10x10cm. Divida em dois molhos de 24 quadrados e num deles corte a parte central das peças com 6x6cm. Corte 24 pedaços de tecido, iguais dois a dois, com 8x8cm.

How to make it:
Cut the cardboard into 48 pieces of10x10cm. Divide them into twogroups of 24 squares and, in one of them, cut the central parts of the pieces with 6x6cm. Cut 24 fabric pieces, equal in pairs, with8x8cm.
You already have all the necessary parts.Now you just have to assemble everything together.

Já tem todas as peças necessárias. Agora basta colar tudo.
Com a cola de stic cole cada pedaço de tecido no centro de cada um dos cartões inteiros. Com a cola universal (muito bem espalhada para colar bem sem sair por fora) cole os quadrados sem a parte central sobre os quadrados inteiros fazendo coincidir os seus limites. Tenha o cuidado de usar sempre o mesmo lado do cartão para que as peças fiquem todas iguais.

Glue each piece of fabric in the center of each of the 10x10cm squares with the glue stick. With the universal glue(spread it very wellso it won’t “melt”) glue each square without the central part to each square with the fabric by matching their limits. Be careful to always use the same side of the card so that all cards look the same.

 

Junte todas as peças sobre uma mesa e ponha um ou mais livros pesados em cima para fazer pressão e ficar tudo bem colado.
E já está!

Join all the pieces on a table and put one or more heavy books on topto press them together.
That's it!

 

Pode ainda fazer um saco para guardar o jogo usando a “receita” do saco de para-vento. Basta adaptar as medidas.

E depois é só jogar. É um jogo divertido para jogar com crianças e adultos porque, no que diz respeito á memória, elas são tão boas ou melhores do que nós!

And then, all you have to do is play. It's a fun game to play with children and adults because, when it comes to the memory, they are as good as us!
