PS -
Finally my sewing machine is working
properly and I’m sewing again!
I’ve finished the dress that should have been ready for week four of PR&P. The theme, a garment for Valentine's Day, was not really my favorite but, maybe because of that, it was a great challenge.
I started with the fantastic (and free) Popover Sundress pattern from Oliver + S. I’ve already sewn two dresses for my daughters with this pattern last year and they were always a success. Simple, classic and easy to sew.
The main fabric is a piece of basic red cotton I found on sale at the store I usually go. I’ve joined a red and white stripedribbon piping (it's hard to find the right translation, same times...) I bought long time ago at Benfica's
street market for the yoke finish. And I was lucky enough to find some bias
tape for the straps exactly the same color as the fabric.
The dress was ready, but it still lacked the hearts of Valentine's Day ... Anyone who knows me knows that hearts and Valentine’s Day are not really my kind of thing. I think that those things are all a bit corny!
But I had to do it, so I decided to sew a heart garland at the base of the dress. I had never done any kind of embroidered work before but it was easier than I thought.
I started by drafting the heart garland
in my computer using Autocad, the software I use for my architecture projects. Then
I printed it and passed it to the dress using the old technique of decal. Just redraw
the intended design with a charcoal pencil on top of the printed sheet of paper,
put it on top of the fabric with the design facing the fabric and decal by
drawing the design on the unprinted face (I hope that’s clear enough…). After that
I’ve just embroidered it by hand sewing it all with running stitches.I’ve finished the dress that should have been ready for week four of PR&P. The theme, a garment for Valentine's Day, was not really my favorite but, maybe because of that, it was a great challenge.

The final result was a pleasant surprise. Embroidering is not as boring as I thought. But the best part is that it can be done anywhere and it is not as noisy as sewing with a sewing machine. I thing I will do it more often!
