BESS TOP . IMAGINE GNATS PATTERN TOUR AND A GIVEAWAY

Quando a Rachel me contactou para fazer parte da Imagine Gnats Pattern Tour, dizendo que eu poderia escolher qualquer um dos seus moldes de costura, soube imediatamente qual iria ser.
Embora goste de todos os moldes da Imagine Gnats, há muito tempo que andava a namorar o BessTop. E esta foi a desculpa perfeita para o experimentar e começar a costurar para mim.
Costurar para “crescidos” é completamente diferente de costurar para as miúdas. A elas tudo lhes fica bem. O meu corpo é tridimensional e caprichoso! Mas fiquei agradavelmente surpreendida com a minha primeira túnica “homemade”. Não só ficou gira, como assenta lindamente e é super confortável.

When I received Rachel’s email asking me if I wanted to be part of her Imagine Gnats Pattern Tour and telling me I could choose any of her great sewing patterns, I immediately knew which pattern I was going to sew. 
Although I like all Imagine Gnats Patterns, I have to admit I was in love with Bess Top for quite some time. And this was just the perfect excuse to try it and start some “selfish sewing” sessions.
Sewing for me is so different from sewing for the girls… While everything looks great on them, my body is a lot more three-dimensional and difficult to please! But, you know what? I was pleasantly surprised with my first homemade tunic. Not only it looks cool, but the fitting is perfect and it is actually super comfortable.

Claro que ter um molde impecável ajudou muito! Tirando aquele (maldito!) ângulo junto ao ombro na junção dos dois tecidos, toda a construção é fácil e rápida de costurar. A realidade é que, depois de ter cortado o tecido, não demorei mais de uma hora a ter tudo pronto.
Em altura, o molde tem 3 opções: camisa, túnica e vestido. Tem ainda duas opções de gola, uma mais chegada ao pescoço e outra mais aberta. Mais, a túnica e o vestido podem ter bolsos inseridos nas costuras latearias. E as opções de tamanho são imensas (à americana!).
Eu optei pela versão túnica (embora tenha feito a linha da bainha do molde de vestido) com gola menos pronunciada. O tecido foi aproveitado de um lençol de linho antigo e tingido com pigmento preto. Para dar tons distintos às peças da frente e das costas usei níveis de diluição diferentes. A peça da frente ficou quase preta e bastante homogénea, enquanto a peça das costas ficou mais cinzenta e um pouco manchada.Adorei o resultado!

Of course having an impeccable pattern helped a lot! Besides that tricky angle near the shoulder where front and back panels meet, the top is really fast and easy to sew. It only took me about one hour to make it and, believe me, I am a very, very slow seamstress.
The Bess Top Pattern has lots and lots of sizes (over 20!) but it has also several options. You can choose from shirt, tunic or dress length and you can go for two different necklines. The tunic and dress also have optional side seam pockets.
I choose the tunic version but made it with the dress hem, instead of the original subtitle hi-lo hem. The fabric is a vintage linen from an old sheet my mother gave me. Since I didn’t want this shirt to be plain white I dyed it with black pigment. To give different shades of gray to the back and front panels, I used different levels of dilution. The front panel is almost black and it is quite homogeneous, while the back panel is grayer and slightly stained.
I love my new tunic!

Mas agora percebo porque as minhas filhas nem sempre estão com vontade de posar para mim. Muito obrigada Rita pela paciência e pelas óptimas fotografias, apesar da péssima modelo!

SEW ALL 26 . I IS FOR INES

Há umas semanas fui contactada pela Katy do blog No Big Dill para participar na sua série Sew All 26. Como tinha que escolher uma letra do alfabeto e depois costurar algo alusivo a essa letra escolhi a letra T, a primeira letra do nome da minha filha Teresa e também uma letra que daria pano para mangas no que diz respeito a termos de costura (em inglês: Top, Trousers, Turquoise,…)

A few weeks ago I received an email from Katy (she blogs at No Big Dill and I’m sure you know her and her great work) inviting me to be part of her series Sew All 26. I had to pick a letter of the alphabet and then sew something inspired by this letter. I end up choosing the letter T, as it is the first letter on my oldest daughter name, Teresa, and also because there are lots of sewing terms with it: Top, Trousers, Turquoise, ...

Depois achei que a Inês, a minha filha mais nova, também deveria ter direito a uma peça de roupa inspirada na primeira letra do seu nome. Mas nunca pensei que a costura (mais uma vez, em inglês) tivesse tão poucas palavras começadas por I… Puxei pela cabeça, procurei na net, em livros e nada!
Entretanto lembrei-me que Inkodye, uma tinta que reage à luz e dá resultados incríveis, começa com I. Mas essa tinta não se consegue arranjar em Portugal… Daí lembrei-me de tingir… Daí surgiu Índigo, um dos meus pigmentos naturais preferidos!  

Then I thought I should also sew something for Ines, my youngest daughter, inspired on her name’s first letter. But I never thought there would be so few sewing terms starting with an I... I searched all over the place (internet, books, inside my brain,...) and found nothing!I had to go for something else. I remembered that Inkodye, light-sensitive vat dye for natural fibers, starts with I. But I couldn’t buy it in Portugal... Then I thought that dyeing fabric with Indigo (yeah, that’s an I!) was something I wanted to do for a long time, so I had my problem solved!

Infelizmente não usei pigmento natural porque é, mais uma vez, impossível de encontrar em Portugal e porque, segundo consegui saber, é um dos pigmentos mais difíceis de usar. Usei pigmento sintético da Dylon que se encontra facilmente nas drogarias.
Como esta foi a minha primeira experiencia a tingir tecido optei por fazer algo bem simples e assim ter (quase) a certeza que tudo iria correr bem. Fiz uma saia para a Inês em veludo cotelê branco muito fininho, com uma barra tingida com azul índigo e um forro também tingido com um tom diferente da mesma cor.

Unfortunately, I didn’t go for the natural pigment because, once again it is impossible to find in Portugal, and also because it seems to be one of the hardest pigments to work with. Instead, I bought a sachet of dark blue synthetic pigment from Dylon at my local drugstore.
As this was my first experience dyeing fabric I chose to make something super simple so I would be (almost) sure that everything would go smoothly. I made a basic twirl skirt for Ines in light weight white corduroy with an Indigo dyed hem line. Since the corduroy fabric was slightly transparent, I added a lining skirt in a slightly lighter shade of Indigo.

Tingi o tecido do forro antes de o começar a costurar mas a barra da saia ganhou cor quando esta já estava meia feita (tinha a costura lateral e a bainha já terminadas).
Gosto imenso do efeito da tinta na barra da saia! Gosto do degradê da cor e de esta ter “subido” ao longo das riscas do veludo cotelê de forma não muito homogénea.
Adorei tingir tecido e tenho a certeza que o irei fazer mais vezes. Talvez da próxima com pigmentos naturais…

The fabric for the lining skirt was dyed before I started sewing it but I only made the indigo hem line on the corduroy outer skirt after sewing the side seam and hem.
I really like the Indigo hombre effect on the outer skirt hem! The way the color “climbed” the corduroy stripes is really nice, I think.
I loved the experience of dyeing fabric and I am sure I will do it more often. Maybe next time I’ll try natural pigments...
